What causes it? What are the best solutions?

Most Common Causes:
Each strand of hair sits in a tiny hole in the skin called a follicle (this is the root). In general, baldness occurs when the hair follicle shrinks over time, resulting in shorter and finer hair. Eventually, the follicle does not grow new hair. The follicles remain alive but dormant, as they are too weak to grow new hair. This suggests that it is still possible to grow new hair. Therefore, you need to act quickly when you notice hair thinning or hair loss.
The reasons for female pattern baldness are not well understood, but may be related to:
- Aging
- Changes in the levels of androgens (hormones that can stimulate male features)
- Family history of male or female pattern baldness
- Heavy loss of blood during menstrual periods
- Certain medicines, such as estrogenic oral contraceptive
- High levels of stress
- Hormone changes during pregnancy or right after
Symptoms:
Hair thinning is in women different from that of male pattern baldness. In female pattern baldness:
- Hair thins mainly on the top and crown of the scalp. It usually starts with a widening through the center hair part. This pattern of hair loss is known as Christmas tree pattern.
- The front hairline remains unaffected except for normal recession, which happens to everyone as time passes.
- The hair loss rarely progresses to total or near total baldness, as it may in men.
- If the cause is increased androgens, hair on the head is thinner while hair on the face is coarser.
Itching or skin sores on the scalp are generally not seen.
Medications to Treat Hair Loss:
The best treatment for you will depend on the cause of your hair loss or thinning.
Ask your doctor to run your hormone and vitamin level panels to see if anything is off balance. Sometimes, this will be the issue and once fixed, your hair will start to grow normally again.
In other instances, a woman might consider a medication like minoxidil (Rogaine), which helps with certain types of hair loss, or another treatment to replace or regrow lost hair.
A newer option being used to treat hair loss is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. For this treatment, the doctor draws your blood, divides it into its separate components, recombines the blood fluid (plasma) with a high concentration of platelets (structures in the blood that help with clotting, among other functions), and introduces the resulting preparation back into the scalp.

Hair Care and Styling Tips for Thinning Hair
At the other end of the spectrum is hair transplantation, a surgical procedure that moves active follicles from the back of the scalp to areas where the hair is thinning.
